For “Where have all the flowers gone“ Tom Hunter – known for his social documentary projects in London, England and Europe about alternative cultures and himself an avid follower of popular, contemporary and experimental music– takes us to the Glastonbury Festival. From it’s beginnings in the 70’s this festival was inspired by the ethos of the hippie movements. Tom Hunter set up his “naked truth photo booth“ at the 2016 venue and asked festival goers to stand for portrait naked inside the wooden booth. The people who agreed stood portrait single, as couples, groups, fully naked or slightly covered with their hands and show a little or no shame to present themselves fully nude. In the spirit of the first summer of love atmosphere they have nothing to hide and loose. Hunter took their portraits on medium sized film in the classical tradition of 19th century portrait photographers. The book is accompanied by text and images by the parents of the photographer, based on their visits to the “Isle of Wight“ festival and their experiences of freedom, liberty and counter culture in the early 70’s. The images by Tom Hunter and their stories create a contemporary but at the same moment nostalgic view of the atmosphere and youth culture of our times referring to the historical roots of the movement.
The work will be exhibited at the Martin Parr Foundation in June 2020 to celebrate 50 years of the Glastonbury Festival.
